Ontario Class Action Lawsuit

While Sixties Scoop claims have been filed in several other provinces, only the Ontario action has been certified and established liability in the court. The $1.3-billion Ontario action filed in 2009 alleged about 16,000 at-risk indigenous children in Ontario suffered a devastating loss of identity when they were placed in non-aboriginal homes from 1965 to 1984 under terms of a federal-provincial agreement. In February, after an eight-year court battle, an Ontario Superior Court judge found in favour of the plaintiff.
